Thomas Nast drew this wood engraving for *Harper's Weekly*, where it ran across two pages of the March 14, 1863, issue. It appeared just after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863, and as the Union was beginning to enlist African American men as soldiers. *Harper's* was one of the most widely read illustrated weeklies of the period, so its images shaped how northern readers pictured Black troops. The engraving is worth studying for how it presents these men as soldiers in the thick of a fight, at a moment when that image was still new to many viewers.
