Among the Crimean War portraits in the Fenton collection, this one stands out for its named sitters: the record identifies officers Leslie Skynner, Frederick Charles Aylmer, Caledon Richard Egerton and John Macdonald Cuppage among the officers and men of the 89th Regiment of Foot, the Royal Irish Fusiliers. Roger Fenton made such group studies during his 1855 visit to the Crimean front, when British regiments camped on the plateau above Sevastopol and photography was still a slow process requiring long exposures. The salted paper print, which gave softer tones than the albumen prints that later replaced it, shows how regimental identity was presented to the public back home.
