Few pictures from the Crimean War show the everyday business of camp life as plainly as this view of the 71st Regiment, the Highland Light Infantry, at the commissariat camp near Balaklava. Roger Fenton made it around 1855, during the months he spent in the Crimea documenting the British army, and it is an early salted paper print from that campaign. Balaklava's harbor, south of Sevastopol, was the hub through which food, ammunition and equipment reached the troops, so the huts and gathered soldiers reflect the supply work that kept the siege going. Fenton's Crimean photographs are among the earliest sustained photographic records of a war.
