Officers of the 57th Regiment stand before a row of bell tents on the Crimean plateau, a camp setting that marks this print as a record of daily army life rather than a studio portrait. The regiment, known as the West Middlesex, had held its ground at the Battle of Inkerman in November 1854 and earned the nickname the Die-Hards. Roger Fenton made the picture in 1855, during a spring he spent in Crimea producing some of the earliest large-scale photographic records of a war. The salted paper process gives the print its soft, warm tones, quite unlike the sharper images of later decades.
