Lieutenant Colonel William Munro stands at the head of the officers of the 39th Regiment of Foot, the Dorsetshire regiment, in this group portrait. Roger Fenton made such images of British army units during his 1855 visit to the Crimea, when the siege of Sevastopol had dragged on for months. Fenton's work from the trip is often valued as one of the earliest large photographic records of a modern war, and it shows officers at rest rather than in combat. This print is made by the salted paper process, which gives it the soft, brownish tones typical of photographs from that period.
