A lieutenant of the Royal Horse Artillery stands beside his horses in this 1855 portrait. The name appears on the back of the print as "Strangeways," though the subject heading spells it "Strangways." The picture belongs to Roger Fenton's Crimean War photographs, made during his months in the Crimea in 1855 while the British army was camped above Sevastopol. Fenton's negatives were wet collodion, and this is a salted paper print, a process that produced soft, warm tones and was the standard way to print such images at the time. The horses in the frame are a reminder of how central cavalry and artillery animals were to the campaign.
