Elephants, rather than horses or mules, were the animals hauling this battery of heavy guns, which sets this view apart from more typical pictures of the British Indian army. William Henry Jackson took the photograph between February 5 and 8, 1895, while traveling with the World's Transportation Commission, a round-the-world tour. Harper's Weekly printed it as a halftone that same year. Indian army units often used elephants to move artillery over rough ground that wheeled carriages could not cross, and the picture records that practice a generation before the wars of the twentieth century.
