A stereograph of the Fourth Artillery's light battery at Camp Tampa, Florida, shows a unit encamped in the state during the Spanish-American War, when Tampa served as a major staging point for troops bound for Cuba in 1898. Such camps were crowded and hot, and many soldiers spent weeks there waiting for transport, with disease and shortages often a bigger problem than combat. The card was published by Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York firm that issued stereo views for home parlor viewers, so the image was made to be seen in depth through a stereoscope. Its catalog date of about 1898 places it in the months of the war's mobilization.
