Soviet rocket launchers, mounted on trucks and firing volleys of unguided rockets, are the focus of this halftone, which its title places in the fighting for Berlin in 1945. That battle, which ended in early May with the German capital in Soviet hands, relied heavily on massed artillery, and these launchers were prized for delivering a dense barrage in seconds. Crews called the weapon "Katyusha," a nickname that became widely known during the war. The caption card records no date, so the picture is best read as a general view of late-war Soviet artillery.
