Two figures poised in a dramatic battle stance on a parapet set this illustration apart, even though its title ties them to the Seven Ages of Man, the speech Jaques delivers in Shakespeare's *As You Like It*. In that speech, a life moves from infancy through the soldier who seeks "the bubble reputation / Even in the cannon's mouth" to old age. Pairing those stages with a battle scene likely turned Shakespeare's wry catalog into a visual joke about youthful bravado. Dated to about 1876, the print predates both world wars, so the gallery's WWI and WWII grouping reflects later organization rather than the picture's own setting.
