A man stands upright in a small boat above a fish trap in this 1919 photograph, a scene of fishing in the Hawaiian Islands that the title and subject headings place in the 1910s. Native Hawaiians had built stone fish traps and walled fishponds along the coasts for centuries, using tides to corral fish, and such structures were still in use when this picture was made. The photograph was taken by a photographer named Rice and registered for copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office, a deposit that helped preserve it in the Library of Congress. It offers a glimpse of working coastal life in Hawaii, when the islands were a U.S. territory.
