Here a pontoon bridge of boats is lashed together across the Yongow branch of the Yung River at Ningpo, the port city now called Ningbo in Zhejiang Province. Floating bridges like this were a practical answer to crossing wide, busy waterways where a fixed span was costly to build, and they could be opened to let cargo boats pass. Ningpo had been one of the treaty ports opened to foreign trade after 1842, which drew Western photographers and publishers to the city around 1900. Underwood & Underwood issued this view as a stereograph, so it was meant to be seen as a three-dimensional pair and sold for home parlor viewing.
