Streetcars cross a bridge in this high, bird's-eye view of Shanghai, with rows of buildings stretching back behind them. Taken around 1935, the picture shows a city that was then among the largest and busiest in Asia, a major port where Chinese neighborhoods and foreign-administered international settlements stood side by side. The elevated angle makes the density of rooftops and the flow of traffic easy to read, offering a clear view of how the city was laid out in the years before the Second World War.
