Few sites in Peking carried more ceremonial weight than the Temple of Heaven, where Ming and Qing emperors came each year to pray for good harvests. Built in the early 1400s under the Yongle emperor, the complex is best known for its circular Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, a building with tiered roofs set on a marble terrace. This view comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection, whose travel photographs record China in the decades around 1900 and show the temple grounds as foreign visitors of that era would have seen them.
