Few sights in old Peking were as imposing as the high red walls that enclosed the Forbidden City, the palace complex built in the early 1400s for the Ming emperors and later home to the Qing court. This c1932 print, credited to the White Brothers photographic firm, shows the palace's outer defenses at a time when the city was known as Peiping, after the Nationalist government moved the capital to Nanjing. The imperial household had left the palace only in 1924, and it opened as a public museum in 1925, so the photograph captures a site in transition.
