Steamers tied up along the Chukiang River, the older romanized name for the Pearl River, at Canton, the port now called Guangzhou. By about 1900 the city was a major trading center in southern China, and river steamers carried passengers and cargo between the port and the wider delta and coast. The stereo card was published in New York by Underwood & Underwood, a firm that sold stereoviews of distant places to home viewers who used hand-held stereoscopes to see the scene in three dimensions. The waterfront shown here offers a glimpse of how foreign shipping and river traffic met the city's older working harbor at the turn of the century.
