The stereograph shows a row of small, enclosed cells in the examination hall at Canton, where candidates for the *juren* provincial degree, rendered here as the "Ku-yan (A.B. degree)," were sealed in for the length of the examinations. The cells were a safeguard against cheating in a system that ranked men through memorized classical essays and poems, and the hall was among the largest such complexes in China. Underwood & Underwood, the American firm that issued the card, sold stereographs of China to Western audiences around 1900, when the imperial examination system was nearing its end; it was abolished in 1905.
