The caption places this scene on the Yangtze River at Hankow, China, where a seaplane belonging to Charles A. Lindbergh was hauled from the water just after leaving the deck of the British aircraft carrier HERMES. Lindbergh, famous since his 1927 solo Atlantic crossing, was then surveying air routes across the Pacific and Asia with his wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh. The record dates the photograph to about October 31, 1931, but that date comes from an unverified caption card, so it is worth checking against other sources.
