Victoria Peak, the steep hill rising above Hong Kong's harbor, is the subject of this stereograph, which also takes in a hotel and a fort on its slopes. By the early twentieth century the peak had become a retreat for British merchants and officials, who built houses there to escape the heat and crowding of the city below. They reached it by the Peak Tram, which had opened in 1888. Cards like this one, issued in Philadelphia for American viewers, let people at home look down on a distant colony from a height few of them would ever climb.
