Captured Boxers standing trial before the High Court in China is the scene this stereo card records, a subject that is far more specific than a general view of the country. The Boxer uprising of 1899 to 1901 was a violent movement against foreign missionaries, diplomats and Chinese Christians, and its suppression led to foreign military intervention and a harsh settlement imposed on the Qing government. The card's printed date of about 1919 does not match its caption tracings, which link it to 1900, so the event is best understood as belonging to the uprising's aftermath. Stereographs like this were sold widely as parlor entertainment, and viewed through a stereoscope they gave home audiences a sense of depth and presence in distant places.
