The High is the main east-west thoroughfare of Oxford, and its run past several of the university's colleges, including University College, Oriel, Queen's, and All Souls, gave it the reputation this card's title claims. The stereograph, a pair of slightly offset photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, was issued by the H.C. White Company, a firm known for mass-producing such cards for parlor viewing in the early twentieth century. Around 1902, these cards offered armchair travelers a three-dimensional look at distant places, and street scenes like this one show the stone colleges, shopfronts, and foot traffic that made Oxford a favorite subject.
