Samuel Swartwout and William M. Price share the stage in this 1838 lithograph, which the title places at a sub-treasurers' meeting in England. Swartwout had served as collector of the Port of New York under Andrew Jackson, and he left for England that year after a large shortfall in his accounts came to light. The scandal fed arguments over how public money should be handled, and the print's appearance in the subject list alongside Tammany Hall and the independent treasury ties it to those partisan fights. H.R. Robinson, a New York printer, issued it as one of many inexpensive political prints of the period.
