Few pictures show the Soviet agricultural campaigns of the late 1940s as directly as this three-part composite, which pairs Trofim Lysenko holding up onions at a meeting with a Moscow crowd and a group examining grain in a field. Lysenko, an agronomist who promoted methods such as vernalization and rejected Mendelian genetics, saw his views made official in August 1948, when a session of the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences condemned genetics. The Russian caption, which marks the image as part of a photo exhibition, presents his work as a model for collective farms, reflecting the state's effort to bring scientific research under political direction.
