Red brick walls and the gilded domes of its cathedrals rise above the streets in this view of the Kremlin, dated to about 1918, the year Moscow became the capital of Soviet Russia. In March 1918 the Bolshevik government moved from Petrograd to Moscow, and the old fortress, long the heart of tsarist power, became the seat of the new government. The photograph's attention to the cathedrals and the streets around them shows a city in transition, with its religious landmarks standing beside a new political order. The photographer is not identified, so the scene is best read as a document of its moment.
