The Cathedral of St. Basil stands at the south end of Red Square in Moscow, and its cluster of brightly colored, onion-domed towers has no close match in the city's skyline. The caption card credits its start to Ivan the Terrible in 1554, a date that fits the tsar's campaigns of the period, including his conquest of the Khanate of Kazan in 1552. The building became a lasting symbol of Moscow and of Russia. The caption card dates this view to around 1918, a turbulent year when the Bolsheviks were about to move the national capital back to Moscow.
