St. Basil's Cathedral, with its cluster of bulbous, brightly striped domes, stands at the south end of Red Square in Moscow. Ivan IV, known as Ivan the Terrible, had it built in the 1550s to mark his conquest of Kazan, and its nine chapels surround a central tower. This print comes from the 1890s, when the photochrom process, a Swiss method that combined photography with several lithographic color stones, gave views like this a soft, painted look. The French and Cyrillic captions suggest the image was meant for the travel trade and for buyers in Europe as well as Russia.
