A winter market scene in Moscow, captured on a stereo card, shows how townspeople gathered to buy and trade in the cold. Around 1919, the city was under strain from the Russian Civil War and the policies of War Communism, when official rationing often fell short of demand. Street and open-air markets became vital for food, fuel, and household goods, and they often operated informally. Stereographs like this were made as pairs of slightly offset images, which a viewer could fuse through a stereoscope to see the scene in depth.
