Five German riflemen in winter uniforms trudge through the Caucasus Mountains in December 1942, a scene from the southern front at its farthest reach. That summer, German forces pushed toward the Caucasus oil fields in an offensive called Operation Edelweiss, but by late autumn the advance had slowed under steep terrain, early snow, and stiffening Soviet resistance. Photographs like this one, credited to Poetsch, were often produced for wartime audiences at home, presenting soldiers as steady and equipped for the cold. The heavy winter clothing and long supply lines behind these men hint at how hard the season was on troops so far from their bases.
