Set on the bank of the Neva River, the Winter Palace was the principal residence of the Russian tsars until the revolution of 1917, and this stereo card shows its long facade as a pair of nearly identical images meant to be seen together through a viewer. Architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli designed the current building in the 1750s and 1760s, and it now houses part of the State Hermitage Museum. The card was issued by Underwood & Underwood, an American firm that sold stereographs of distant places to home audiences, so it reflects the late-century appetite for armchair travel. The c1897 date comes from an older caption and is approximate.
