Shown here as part of a larger photograph, this scene recalls Bloody Sunday, when imperial troops fired on a peaceful procession in St. Petersburg in January 1905. The marchers, led by the priest Georgy Gapon, had come to present a petition to Tsar Nicholas II asking for better working conditions and political reforms. The killings and injuries that followed shattered public trust in the throne and helped set off the revolution of 1905. The record's caption card is only partly verified, so details of the scene should be checked against other sources.
