Set at Tsarskoe Selo, the imperial residence outside Petrograd that is now called Pushkin, this picture shows Nicholas II and his family at garden work in 1917. After the February Revolution and the emperor's abdication that March, the Romanovs were held under guard at the Alexander Palace, and the subject headings describe the scene as part of their captivity. Gardening gave the family a way to fill the long days of confinement. The photograph was copyrighted in 1921 by Underwood & Underwood of New York, a firm known for stereoviews and news pictures, and this print is a cropped version of a larger image.
