Nicolai Bridge, named for Tsar Nicholas I, carried traffic across the Neva River in St. Petersburg. The crossing was built in the 1840s and opened in 1850, and it was among the first permanent bridges linking the city's two banks. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service of New York, which sold pictures of places around the world to newspapers and magazines. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year the picture was taken is unknown.
