This 1801 engraved plan singles out the imperial residence, marking the seat of the court within the city's layout. Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg in 1703 on the marshy delta of the Neva River, and it served as Russia's capital from 1712 until 1918. The map was issued as an illustration in Heinrich Storch's *Picture of Petersburg*, a descriptive survey of the city from that year, which makes it a useful view of how the capital was presented at the close of the eighteenth century.
