Reims was the forward headquarters of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF), and this 1945 view shows the building in the days after Germany's unconditional surrender was signed there in early May. The signing took place in a schoolhouse that Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's staff had taken over as their working base, so the site is tied directly to the end of the war in Europe. The photograph was made by Lt. Moore of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, and the caption card's details are noted as unverified, so the exact scene is best read through the building and its period.
