Above this cathedral entrance, a carved Last Judgment fills the space over the doors, placing the viewer at the threshold of the church where the scene was meant to be seen. The sculpture follows a long medieval tradition in which Christ presides at the center while the dead rise and are sorted toward salvation or damnation, a message aimed at worshippers who could not necessarily read. Taken around 1907 as a stereograph, the picture was meant to be viewed through a paired-lens viewer, which gave the stone a sense of depth and made distant French churches a popular armchair journey for home audiences of the period.
