General John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces, clasps hands with Marshal Ferdinand Foch, the Allied supreme commander, at Brest on the Atlantic coast of France. The port was a vital landing point for American troops and supplies during the war, which gives the meeting added weight. The caption calls it a final handshake, though that detail is unverified, and the photoprint, copyrighted by W.L. Mann around 1919, shows the formal warmth of the Allied partnership as the fighting ended.
