Marie Antoinette, the Austrian-born queen who married the future Louis XVI in 1770, is the subject of this portrait, which the Library of Congress catalogs as a lithograph (the record marks the medium with a question mark) after an engraving by an artist named Leney. Her reign, which began in 1774 when Louis XVI took the throne, grew increasingly unpopular in France amid debt, extravagance and political unrest, and she was executed during the Revolution in 1793. Prints like this one circulated widely in the nineteenth century, when her life was retold as a cautionary tale about monarchy and its fall.
