Louis Paulhan is caught rounding a marker at the Reims airfield in August 1909, during the flight that the caption says took the world distance record from Wilbur Wright. The picture comes from the Grande Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne, the first large public aviation meet, which drew pilots and crowds from across Europe to the flat fields outside the city. Printed as a postcard and sold to meet visitors, it shows how quickly the event became a national spectacle. The record itself is unverified in this archive, but the scene captures the excitement of the early years of powered flight.
