Louis XVI, the last king of France before the Revolution, appears here in a head-and-shoulders engraving that shows him turned to the left, the conventional pose for formal royal likenesses of the period. He reigned from 1774 until the monarchy was abolished in 1792, and he was executed in January 1793. Portraits like this one circulated widely in the late eighteenth century, serving both as official images of kingship and as commercial prints for a broad public. The caption card records no date, so the engraving's exact making is uncertain, but its subject ties it firmly to the final years of the French monarchy.
