Turned to the left and framed head and shoulders, this chromolithograph presents Robert Edward Lee in a pose that sets it apart from many of the frontal likenesses made of him. Lee (1807-1870) commanded the Confederacy's Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War and surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. After the war he became president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia, and remained a widely pictured figure. Chromolithography, which built a color image from several stones, made colorful portraits like this one affordable for ordinary buyers in the late nineteenth century.
