Arms folded and gaze turned to the left, Karl Liebknecht appears in this head-and-shoulders portrait made around 1911, when he was a prominent voice in Germany's Social Democratic movement. The photograph is credited to G. G. Bain, whose news photography agency supplied pictures of public figures to newspapers, and it was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office. Liebknecht later became one of the most outspoken critics of Germany's war effort and co-founded the Spartacus League in 1918. He was killed in Berlin in January 1919 after the failed uprising, so the portrait now captures a figure whose radical politics made him both admired and feared.
