This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Paul Hymans, the Belgian statesman who served as his country's foreign minister and represented Belgium in the diplomacy that followed the First World War. The photograph, dated around 1919, is attributed to Harris & Ewing, a Washington, D.C., studio that made many portraits of visiting diplomats and public figures. Its profile pose, with the sitter turned to the left, was a common formal convention of the period, and it reflects the postwar years, when Belgian leaders sought to secure their nation's future in Europe and the wider international order.
