Clifford M. Holland is the subject here, a man whose name is fixed to one of the great engineering works of his era, the Holland Tunnel under the Hudson River between Manhattan and Jersey City. This head-and-shoulders portrait, shown in an oval frame and turned slightly to the left, belongs to the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs collection and is dated only tentatively to about 1920. Holland directed the tunnel's construction until his death in 1924, shortly before it opened to traffic in 1927, so the picture captures him during the years when the project was consuming his working life.
