This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Venustiano Carranza in profile, turned to the left. Carranza rose to prominence during the Mexican Revolution as leader of the Constitutionalist faction, which opposed Victoriano Huerta and later fought rival revolutionary leaders. He became president in 1917 and presided over the adoption of a new constitution that year, a document that still shapes Mexican government. The caption card gives no date, so the photograph's exact year is unknown, but it likely comes from his years in power.
