A head-and-shoulders study of Carlota, the Belgian princess who became Empress of Mexico as the wife of Archduke Maximilian, this card is turned to the left and carries the imprint of Neurdein, a Paris studio. It was pasted into an album of portraits connected to Maximilian's reign, which began in 1864 after French military intervention in Mexico placed the Habsburg couple on the throne. Carte de visite portraits like this were sold widely in the 1860s and 1870s, so albums such as this one let viewers far from Mexico City follow the imperial court's faces. The record notes some doubt about whether the image is a photograph of an earlier print, which is worth keeping in mind when judging its detail and tone.
