Alfonso XIII, who became king of Spain at birth in 1886 and took the throne in full in 1902, is shown here standing in uniform, turned to the right in a full-length pose typical of official royal portraiture. The print was made by Kaljak Art Photo in Madrid, a studio active during the 1910s, and it entered the Library of Congress through the collection of Arthur S. Riggs of New York City. Dating from roughly the decade before Spain's neutrality in World War I, it shows how the monarchy presented itself to the public through carefully composed studio images of this kind.
