Peter I's likeness here reached the viewer secondhand: the image descends from a painting by Godfrey Kneller, was turned into a print by J. Smith, and was then re-engraved by W. Holl. Kneller painted the Russian tsar during Peter's visit to England in 1698, part of the Grand Embassy he undertook to study shipbuilding and Western practice. The half-length pose in armor, turned to the right, follows the formal conventions of royal portraiture. Holl's engraving, made sometime between 1827 and 1871, shows how the image kept circulating long after the original was painted.
