Marie de' Medici (1575–1642) was the Florentine-born wife of Henri IV and regent of France during the minority of her son, Louis XIII, from 1610 to 1617. Her portrait as queen carries the formal conventions of royal representation that she and her court cultivated, and it helps explain how she was presented to the public. The engraving's date and maker are not recorded on its caption card, so its exact origin remains uncertain. Its catalog note also points to a reference copy that may be held by the Curatorial Section, which suggests that further study could firm up its details.
