Jane Seymour is shown here as the queen who finally gave Henry VIII the son he had long sought, though she died about two weeks after Prince Edward's birth in October 1537. The record attributes the original painting to Hans Holbein, the court painter whose portraits shaped how Tudor figures were remembered, but the attribution is marked as unverified, so the link is not firmly settled. Seymour was Henry's third wife, and her brief time as queen, which began in May 1536, is often overshadowed by those who came before and after her. Prints made from paintings like this one spread a queen's likeness well beyond the court.
