Few English kings have left a more troubled reputation than Edward II, whose likeness survives here in an engraving by Ravenet, an engraver who worked in London in the 1700s. Edward ruled from 1307 until he was forced from the throne in 1327, a reign shaped by his favorite, Piers Gaveston, and by the English defeat at Bannockburn in 1314 against Robert the Bruce. The record gives no date for the plate, so it is best read as a much later portrait of a medieval king rather than a likeness made from life.
